چکیده

ABSTR•CT.--I assessed patterns of allozymic variation in Larus argentatus (Herring Gulls), L. cachinnans (Yellow-legged Herring Gulls), L. fuscus (Lesser Black-backed Gulls), L. glaucoides (Iceland Gull), L. hyperboreus (Glaucous Gulls), and L. marinus (Greater Black-backed Gull). I surveyed 34 presumed structural gene loci over 479 individuals. All birds were monomorphic and fixed for the same allele at each of 26 loci. There were neither fixed allelic differences

Genetic differentiation at nuclear and mitochondrial loci among large white-headed gulls: sex-biased interspecific gene flow?

We measured genetic differentiation among species of large white-headed gulls using mitochondrial (cytochrome b haplotypes) and nuclear (microsatellites) markers. Additional information was added using a previously published study of allozymes on the same species. Levels of differentiation among species at nuclear markers are much lower than would be expected for avian species and are not conco...

Fin whale MDH-1 and MPI allozyme variation is not reflected in the corresponding DNA sequences

The appeal of genetic inference methods to assess population genetic structure and guide management efforts is grounded in the correlation between the genetic similarity and gene flow among populations. Effects of such gene flow are typically genomewide; however, some loci may appear as outliers, displaying above or below average genetic divergence relative to the genomewide level. Above averag...

Plant genetic diversity in the Canary Islands: a conservation perspective.

The Canary Islands are an Atlantic volcanic archipelago with a rich flora of ∼570 endemic species. The endemics represent ∼40% of the native flora of the islands, and ∼20% of the endemics are in the E (endangered) category of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. A review of allozyme variation in 69 endemic species belonging to 18 genera and eight families is presented. The averag...

Evidence for selection at multiple allozyme loci across a mussel hybrid zone.

The frequency and strength with which selection shapes patterns of genetic variation is unknown. Whereas all loci should be roughly equally affected by demography and population history, selected loci may exhibit increased or decreased genetic differentiation relative to neutral loci (Cavalli-Sforza 1966). Thus, one way to test for selection on a specific category of loci is to compare geograph...

The herring gull complex is not a ring species.

Under what circumstances speciation in sexually reproducing animals can occur without geographical disjunction is still controversial. According to the ring-species model, a reproductive barrier may arise through 'isolation by distance' when peripheral populations of a species meet after expanding around some uninhabitable barrier. The classical example of this kind of speciation is the herring...
